Championships were decided in five divisions Saturday at the 2011 WIAA State Boys Basketball Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison.
The day was capped off by a wild one as Madison Memorial edged De Pere 80-78 in triple overtime to win its second Division 1 state title in the last three years. It was the first triple overtime game in the history of the boys state tournament. Memorial was making its eighth straight state tournament appearance and won the title for the third time. De Pere was making just its second trip to the state tournament, and first since 1977.
In Division 2, Whitefish Bay ended the miraculous run by Merrill and won 65-49 for its third state title (1996, 1998). Merrill, which was just 11-11 in the regular season, was at state for the only the second time in its history (1964).
La Crosse Aquinas beat Racine St. Catherine’s 40-34 in the Division 3 championship game. Aquinas was at its fifth state tournament in the last nine years. It also won titles in 2003 and 2008. St. Catherine’s had won four of the last five Division 3 state titles, including the last two, and the Division 2 crown six years ago.
In Division 4, Marathon beat Grantsburg 52-43 for its fourth state championship. Marathon won three straight from 1975-77 and was making its first state appearance since 1984. Grantsburg’s only other state appearance was in 2005, when it lost in the championship game as well.
Randolph won its eighth title since 1998, and second in a row, by beating Clayton 49-38 in the Division 5 championship. Clayton was playing in its fourth state tournament since 2000, but have no titles.
