MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield girls soccer team hasn’t had any trouble coming together this season. A mix of veteran players and some newcomers has gelled quickly and the Tigers are off to a red-hot start.
Freshman Darian Molter netted a hat trick and Emily Wolfe added a pair of goals to lift Marshfield to a dominating 6-0 win over Medford in a nonconference game Friday at Figi’s Field at Griese Park.
Not only did the Tigers win their third game in a row – equaling their win total from the 2010 season – they did so with their third straight shutout. In each of the shutout wins this week, Marshfield has not had to make a save in goal as it has controlled the game from start to finish.
“Coming off last year and a losing streak, it’s awesome to get some wins,” Marshfield senior defenseman Alyssa Brenner said. “We’ve been working a lot in practice on our passing and trapping, and that’s really helped us move the ball instead of bombing it downfield like we did last year. The offense has really stepped up.”
Molter scored 4:59 into the game and Courtney Thumann scored off an assist from Emily Brix at the 19:08 mark to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Molter added her second goal, off a pass from Abigail Brock, with 3:53 remaining in the half.
Marshfield (3-1) outshot Medford 10-1 in the first half, with the only shot by the Raiders barely missed wide as the final seconds of the half expired.
The Tigers were just as dominant in the second half. Molter scored 1:21 into the second half to secure her first career hat trick and give Marshfield a 4-0 lead.
“After you’ve practiced so long with people, you get used to who can make what run, who can get what ball and what ball can get delivered,” Molter said of her strong start to her first varsity season. “It’s been very easy. They’ve been welcoming and they’re easy to get along with, and that really helps out on the field.”
Wolfe scored twice in a 2½-minute stretch, the second on an assist from Molter at the 46:24 mark, to end the scoring.
“The defense is definitely our strong point,” Brenner said. “We’ve played together for three years. We have a very cohesive unit. I think we’re pretty organized back there and we’re getting it up there to the offense so they can do what they need to do.”
Marshfield will play three games at the Wausau West Tournament on Saturday.
