MARSHFIELD – In the blink of an eye, Marshfield’s Adam Voss won his first varsity cross country race in come-from-behind fashion Tuesday at the Marshfield Tiger Invitational.
Voss, trailing the defending race champion Andrew Faris of Chippewa Falls by a few seconds as they hit the final 100 yards, turned on the jets and edged Faris by a nose at the tape to win the boys varsity race in 17:09.50 on the Wildwood Park course.
Voss knocked off 26 seconds from his time in Saturday’s Columbus Catholic Invitational on the same course to win the race and lead a group of three Tigers who finished in the top 10 on Tuesday. Marshfield finished second in the team standings, just two points behind Chippewa Falls.
“I just wanted to keep him (Faris) in my sights and I knew he would go hard,” Voss said. “I wanted to keep with him and I knew when we were in the shoot I could probably get him.
“It’s exciting. Hopefully I keep improving, and hopefully I get to state and push our team there. That’s the ultimate goal.”
Nolan Redetzke of Marshfield was third, finishing a little less than 8 seconds behind the leaders. Teammate Max Tibbett was 10th in 18:19.70.
Auburndale finished seventh led by Luke Haas’ fourth-place finish.
Columbus Catholic was ninth and Spencer took 12th.
The girls race came down to Auburndale senior Danica Harrison and Marshfield sophomore Rebecca Voss.
The veteran Harrison won out, pulling away from Voss over the final stretch to win the girls varsity race in 15:46.48, 5½ seconds ahead of Voss. Marshfield, with a seventh-place finish from Jennifer Kaiser (16:59.50) and a ninth-place finish from Leah Cherney (17:01.92) easily won the team title with 45 points. Flambeau was a distant second with 104 points.
Harrison, Voss and Tori Winters of Flambeau ran out in front at the halfway mark and the trio set the pace until Harrison and Voss pulled away.
Those two were side-by-side until the final 400 yards or so, when Harrison eased in front.
“I kicked it in again with about 400 to go and I finally pulled ahead a little bit,” said Harrison, who finished third last year. “With Wausau East not here, I thought this year I had a chance.”
Voss, who said she has been battling an injury that dates back to track season last spring, was pleased with her finish, which was 2 seconds faster than she ran Saturday at the Columbus meet.
“I felt OK,” Voss said. “I think I’ve doing pretty good so far and I’ve been pushing myself. I was glad that I had Danica to keep up with and push myself.”
Auburndale took seventh, Columbus Catholic with 11th and Spencer finished 12th.
Claire Pinter led the way for the Dons with an impressive 10th-place finish in 17:03.69.
