MEDFORD – Spencer/Columbus Catholic/Granton’s Wyatt Karl was the lone Rocket to earn a spot at sectionals after a third-place finish at a WIAA Division 2 wrestling regional Saturday at Medford Area Senior High.
Medford finished with 259 points, well ahead of second-place Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal (191), and both advance to a WIAA Division 2 team sectional at Somerset on Tuesday. Medford will take on St. Croix Central and Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal will face St. Croix Falls in the semifinals, with the winners meeting up for a chance to advance to the 2024 WIAA State Team Wrestling Tournament on March 1-2 at the UW Fieldhouse in Madison.
Karl (18-9) placed third at 215 pounds, winning the third-place match with a pin in 59 seconds over Bruce Hintz of Mosinee. The top four finishers in each weight class earned berths to the individual sectional.
Karl will compete at a WIAA Division 2 individual sectional at Tomahawk next Saturday, Feb. 17. The top three finishers in each weight class qualify for the 2024 WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison on Feb. 22-24.
