CADOTT – Stratford’s quest for a second-straight trip to the WIAA State Team Wrestling Tournament was denied by Cumberland as the Tigers lost a Division 3 team sectional championship dual 42-27 on Tuesday night at Cadott High School.
Stratford won its semifinal match over Shell Lake 53-27, before falling to Cumberland, which qualified for state for the first time since 1999. The 2024 WIAA State Team Wrestling Tournament will be held at the UW Fieldhouse in Madison on March 1-2.
Stratford won six matches by pin and two by forfeit in the victory over Shell Lake.
After a pin by Mathias Kaiser in the opening match at 132 pounds for Stratford, Cumberland ripped off five wins in a row to take command at 21-6.
Carter Lueck (175) and Noah Lucio (190) both had pins for Stratford to keep the Tigers in the match, but Cumberland responded with three more wins, two by pin, to finish off the match.
Stratford will have 12 wrestlers taking part in a WIAA Division 3 individual sectional at Edgar on Saturday. The top three finishers in each weight class qualify for next week’s WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison.
