MARATHON – Grant Warren proved unstoppable, scoring 43 points for Marathon as it finished off an undefeated Marawood Conference South Division championship with a 73-52 win over Auburndale in both teams’ boys basketball regular-season finale Thursday at Marathon High School.
The Raiders jumped out to a 35-18 lead by halftime and finished off the win to run their record to 23-1 overall and a perfect 16-0 in the Marawood South.
Warren made 19 of Marathon’s 31 field goals, including four 3-pointers, and scored 28 points after halftime.
Auburndale was held to just 37 percent shooting (20-for-54) and dropped its second game in a row, finishing the regular season at 20-4 overall and 13-3 in the Marawood South.
Caden Weinfurter led Auburndale with 15 points, and Evan Scholl made four 3-pointers and scored 14.
Both teams will host WIAA Division 4 regional semifinals next Friday, March 1. Marathon, the No. 1 seed in the top half of the Sectional 2 bracket, will host the winner of Tuesday’s game between Colby and Crandon. Auburndale, the No. 2 seed, will play either Phillips or Spencer.
