MERRILL – Cole Irish and Schuyler Seyfert each scored in the first period to get Marshfield off to a good start and the Tigers hung on from there, beating Merrill 4-3 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference boys hockey game Tuesday night.
The win is the Tigers’ first in WVC action this season and improves their record to 4-8 overall and 1-5 in the Valley. Merrill remains winless at 0-9, 0-5 in the WVC.
After 14 minutes of scoreless hockey, Irish scored off assists from Travis Kersten and Bo Howard at the 14:36 mark. Less than 2 minutes later, Seyfert scored off assists from Austin Littmann and Kersten to give Marshfield an early 2-0 lead.
Merrill fought back with a goal from Adam Kohnhorst in what was the start of a furious second period.
Kersten scored on an assist from Alex Krasne less than 1 minute later. About 2:30 later, Merrill cut the deficit to one again, but Marshfield responded with another goal, this time from Zac Alboreo, to take a 4-2 lead into the third period.
Kohnhorst netted a hat trick with his third goal with 4 seconds left in the game, but it was too little, too late as the Tigers won their first Valley game of the season.
Mac Alboreo had 19 saves for the Tigers, while Lukas Mikulasik had 49 for Merrill.
