Stratford boys basketball team wins fifth straight

STRATFORD – Troy Mengel dominated inside, grabbing 11 rebounds and hitting 9 of 11 shots to total 21 points, leading the Stratford boys basketball team to its fifth-straight win, a 52-48 nonconference victory over Abbotsford on Thursday night.

Derek Austin added 11 points and five rebounds for the Tigers, who improve to 7-4. Abbotsford falls to 4-6.

Stratford, which has struggled from the free-throw line this season, had its second solid game in a row from the line, making 12 of 19.

Stratford trailed 28-26 at halftime but was able to pull out the victory, its fourth-straight close game. The Tigers had won their last three games by one point.

The Tigers host Auburndale in a Marawood Conference South Division game Tuesday.
