RHINELANDER – The Marshfield softball team opened its 2024 season going 1-2 at the Danny Mac Classic at the Hodag Dame on Thursday and Friday.
The Tigers opened play with a 4-0 loss to Lakeland on Thursday. Marshfield fell to Rice Lake 8-6 on Friday before defeating Kingsford (Mich.) 20-7 to earn its first win of the season.
In Thursday’s game, Lakeland scored the game’s only four runs in the fifth inning. Marshfield was held to two hits, both doubles by Shylah Brogan.
Katelyn Sternweis suffered the loss on the mound, allowing four runs in four innings with eight strikeouts.
Marshfield got its offense going against Rice Lake on Friday morning, but couldn’t overcome a six-run top of the first inning in suffering the loss.
Brogan and Lillian Griesbach each had three hits, with Griesbach smacking a home run and driving in two.
Marshfield fell behind 5-0 against Kingsford before rolling the win. After trailing 7-1 after two innings, the Tigers scored seven times in the third inning and 12 more times in the fourth to win going away.
The Tigers finished with 20 hits as eight different players had more than one.
Sternweis hit two home runs and drove in four, Madilynn Cole had three hits and five RBI, and Weis had three hits and two RBI for Marshfield.
Sternweis also picked up the pitching victory, striking out six in two scoreless innings of relief.
Marshfield will be back in action April 2 with its Wisconsin Valley Conference opener at Merrill.
