MARSHFIELD – Columbus Catholic scored five times in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull ahead, then held off a late rally to top Spencer 8-7 in the Cloverbelt Conference East Division opener for both teams on Friday at Safford Field at Marshfield High School.
Spencer took a 5-3 lead in the top of the fifth as Tyler Peterson walked and later scored on an error, and Carter Luepke knocked in Reed Knecht.
Peterson took the lead into the bottom of the sixth when the Dons used a big inning to go in front.
Cy Becker scored on a passed ball, Nathan Nemitz tied the game with an RBI single and Blake Jakobi followed with a two-run double to give Columbus Catholic the lead.
The Dons added a very important insurance run when Jakobi scored on a wild pitch with two outs, extending the lead to 8-5.
That run came into play as Spencer rallied in the top of the seventh. A walk, an error and a single by Knecht loaded the bases before Carter Luepke knocked home a run with a sacrifice fly. Another error by the Dons brought Spencer to within a run before Devlin Timmler ended the game with a strikeout, giving Columbus Catholic its fourth-straight win to start the season.
Emmitt Konieczny had three hits and Cy Becker two for the Dons (4-0), who had 10 overall.
Knecht and Luepke both had two hits for Spencer (1-4 overall).
The two teams will play again Saturday at Spencer. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
