MARSHFIELD – Despite throwing a no-hitter in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader against Menomonie, Marshfield was swept in the nonconference baseball twinbill, losing 4-3 and 5-1 at Safford Field.
Menomonie scored all five of its runs in the second inning, chasing Marshfield starter Caleb Schaefer. Three walks, a passed ball, a wild pitch, an error and an RBI groundout led to the big inning for the Mustangs (3-4) despite them not getting a hit.
Menomonie had only one baserunner over the final five innings against Marshfield reliever Dayton Bugar, but the Tigers couldn’t mount a comeback as they were held without a run the rest of the way as well. Bugar struck out five and walked just one in his six hitless innings on the mound.
Chase Robinson hit a first-inning home run for the Tigers’ lone run.
In Game 1, Marshfield fell behind 4-0 before mounting a comeback attempt. Tyler Kremer had a two-run double and scored on a single by Bryce Schade in the sixth to cut the Mustangs’ lead to 4-3.
Marshfield put a pair of runners on with two outs in the seventh before Menomonie was able to wiggle out of the jam.
Schade went 3-for-6 in the doubleheader for Marshfield (1-2).
Marshfield will host Wausau West at Safford Field on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
