First-quarter surge lifts Spencer girls basketball team to blowout win over Gilman

SPENCER – The Spencer girls basketball team couldn’t have asked for a better start to its game Friday night.

The Rockets outscored Gilman 27-0 in the first quarter en route to a 63-14 crushing of the Pirates in a Cloverbelt Conference East Division game at Spencer High School.

Courtney Schulz had 13 points, Tara Matter added 12 and Kyleigh Hebert chipped in 10 for the Rockets, who improved 7-2 overall and 5-2 in the Cloverbelt East. Gilman remains winless at 0-9, 0-7 in the conference.

Spencer pushed the lead to 38-6 by halftime and ripped the Pirates on a 16-1 run in the third quarter to open up a 54-7 lead.

Krystal Weier and Aubrie Bissonette each tossed in eight points for Spencer, which had nine different players score.

The Rockets hosts Edgar in a nonconference game Monday and plays a Cloverbelt East game at Greenwood next Thursday.
