Marshfield’s Hamill ties for first, Tigers tie for second at final Wisconsin Valley Conference Boys Golf Meet

MERRILL – Marshfield’s Afton Hamill tied for medalist honors with a 78 as the Tigers tied for second at the final Wisconsin Valley Conference Boys Golf Tournament leg on Friday at Merrill Public Golf Course.

Hamill tied Wisconsin Rapids’ Jax Pagel and Stevens Point’s Nathan Earnest for first place as the trio finished two strokes ahead of Carter Morrison of Wisconsin Rapids and Jacob Schmeltzer of Merrill.

Wisconsin Rapids won the team title for the first time in the seven-meet tournament series with a 323, five strokes in front of Marshfield, Stevens Point and D.C. Everest. Wausau East placed fifth with a 338, allowing Stevens Point to sneak in front for the overall WVC team championship.

Wausau East’s Teddy Schlindwein shot an 81 to finish in a three-way tie for sixth and wrapped up the overall individual conference title. Morrison, East’s Cooper Bjerke, Marshfield’s Keegan Fredrick and Earnest rounded out the final top five and first-team all-Wisconsin Valley Conference honorees.

Tyler Heiman had an 82, Magnus Machtan shot 83, Fredrick had an 85 and Maxx Oertel shot 86 as well for Marshfield.

Marshfield will host a WIAA Division 1 regional on Tuesday at RiverEdge Golf Course. The top four teams and top four individuals not on those teams move on to a D-1 sectional at Troy Burne Golf Club in Hudson on Tuesday, May 28.
