MARSHFIELD – What looked like a mismatch on paper was anything but that on the field as No. 13 seed Plum City/Elmwood, which came into Thursday’s WIAA Division 4 baseball regional quarterfinal against No. 4 seed Marshfield Columbus Catholic with just one win this season, had the Dons on the ropes.

Trailing 5-2 after 4½ innings, the Dons were able to get their offense going just enough and Carson Eckes’ RBI ground ball in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Columbus Catholic a 6-5 victory at Jack Hackman Field.

Columbus Catholic (16-3) will host No. 5 seed Eleva-Strum (17-8) in a D-4 regional semifinal Tuesday at Hackman Field at 5 p.m. Eleva-Strum shut out Wisconsin Rapids Assumption 4-0 on Thursday.

An error and a sacrifice fly by Emmitt Konieczny gave the Dons a 2-0 lead in the first inning before Plum City/Elmwood (1-18) plated four runs in the third on four singles and an error.

Another Columbus error led to the Wolves’ fifth run, giving them a 5-2 lead in the top of the fifth.

The Dons immediately responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame as Cy Becker had an RBI single and Emmitt Konieczny scored on an error.

Nathan Nemitz had a sacrifice fly in the sixth as the Dons tied the game at 5-5.

Emmitt Konieczny led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and Cy Becker followed with another. The runners moved up a base on a passed ball and Carter Sommer hit a ground ball to third that was bobbled for an error with the runners holding. Konieczny was thrown out trying to advance home on a pitch in the dirt before Eckes hit a sharp ground ball to second that Becker beat home for the game-winning run.

Becker finished with three of the Dons’ seven hits.
