MARATHON – Kaden Anderson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the eighth inning, forcing in the game’s only run as No. 6 seed Auburndale defeated No. 3 Marathon 1-0 in a WIAA Division 3 baseball regional semifinal Wednesday at Marathon High School.
Auburndale starter Aden Cherney and Marathon’s Tyler Underwood matched zeroes through seven innings as base runners were at a minimum.
Blake Underwood came in on the mound in the eighth for the Raiders and promptly beaned Colton Brandl.
After a fielder’s choice groundball erased Brandl at second, Peyton Weinfurter walked and Cherney collected his third hit of the game with a single to load the bases for Auburndale. Following a lineout, Anderson was hit by a pitch to force in a run before a fly out ended the inning.
Blake Raab relieved Cherney for the Eagles and worked around a one-out single to earn the save, sending Auburndale (13-5) into a D-3 regional final at No. 2 seed Stratford (19-5) on Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Tiger Stadium Baseball Field.
Cherney finished with all three of Auburndale’s hits and struck out six with three walks and two hits allowed in seven shutout innings on the mound.
Marathon finishes its season with an 18-4 record.
