Columbus Catholic’s Scheer, Stratford’s Knetter earn medals at opening day of WIAA State Track Meet

LA CROSSE – Marshfield Columbus Catholic’s Isaac Scheer and Stratford’s Brandon Knetter picked up state medals at the opening day of the 2024 WIAA State Track & Field Championships on Friday at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Scheer placed fifth in the Division 3 boys 3,200 meters, running in 9:36.23, and Knetter took sixth in the D-3 boys triple jump with a leap of 42 feet, 7½ inches to earn top-six state medals and a spot on the awards podium.

Three individuals in five events and two Stratford boys relay teams qualified for finals on Saturday with top-10 performance in preliminary races Friday.

Stratford freshman Brianna Sherden placed seventh in the girls 100 meters prelims in 13.02 seconds and 10th in the 200 in 26.25, while teammate Jett Schoenherr placed third in both the boys 100 (11.21) and 200 (22.20) to move on to Saturday.

They will be joined by the Tigers’ 400 boys relay team of Payton Glenn, Zander Zawislan, Coltan Breit and Schoenherr, which qualified first in 42.67, and the 800 relay squad of Glenn, Austin O’Neil, Breit and Zawislan, who placed fourth in 1:31.35.

Auburndale’s Trevor Trowbridge is moving on in the 300 hurdles as well after qualifying 10th in 41.85 seconds.

Not making it to finals after qualifying runs were: Marshfield’s Olivia Page (21st, 200, 26.31), Auburndale’s Rose Hasenohrl (12th, 400, 1:00.73), Stratford’s Dawnyel Martin (15th, 300 hurdles, 49.80), Auburndale’s girls 1,600 relay team of Gracie Hasenohrl, Rose Hasenohrl, Alana Steines and Alivia Wolf (16th, 4:19.07), and Stratford’s boys 1,600 relay team of Austin Niehaus, Garrett Zuelke, Kaden Foster and Zawislan (11th, 3:30.72).

Auburndale’s Logan Nagel placed 12th in the D-3 boys discus (137-8), Marshfield’s Ethan Knecht was 14th in the Division 1 boys discus (151-10), Marshfield’s Emma Ridgway placed eighth in the D-1 girls high jump (5-2), and Sherden was 16th in the Division 3 girls long jump (15-6½).

Competition continues Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
