RIVER FALLS – The Marshfield girls soccer team could not capitalize on some scoring opportunities and dropped a 1-0 decision to River Falls in a WIAA Division 2 regional final Saturday at River Falls High School.

The No. 2 seed River Falls (11-3-7) moves on to a D-2 sectional semifinal at No. 1 seed and Big Rivers Conference rival New Richmond (14-3-6) on Thursday. Holmen (10-5-2) will play at Onalaska (14-0-3) in the other semifinal with the winners meeting on Saturday, June 8, at Altoona for the sectional title and a berth in the state tournament.

No. 3 Marshfield sees its season end with a 7-9-4 record.

River Falls’ Lillia Gray scored 3:04 into the second half for the game’s only goal.

“I was very proud of how my team played tonight,” Marshfield coach Kelly Ongna said. “Our defense consisted of Kaylin Kurth, Ava Paape, Mia Preston, and Hayden Berger, and they played as a solid unit. The midfielders Abby Ongna, Lauryn Katzenberger, Shiloh Smith, Presley Franklin, Cassie Langfoss, Kassidy Christopher, and Keira Raab were able to control the field and make plays offensively. Grace Taylor and Lauren Homolka both were a force for us at striker.

“This concludes our season but the future of Marshfield soccer is bright!”
