PLOVER – The Stratford Legion baseball team opened its 2024 season with a split of a doubleheader against the Plover Junior team on Tuesday at Memorial Park.
Stratford rolled to a 12-0 win in the opener before losing a slugfest in Game 2 13-12.
Henry Zaleski (three innings), Brady Berg (one inning) and Brady Schmidt (two innings) combined on a two-hit six-inning shutout for Stratford in the first game.
Berg had two hits and scored three times, Vance Kielman had two hits and an RBI, and Jaeger Ormond had two singles and scored twice for Stratford.
In Game 2, Stratford scored four times in the fourth and added six more in the fifth to take a 10-8 lead. Plover rallied to tie the game before Stratford pulled ahead again with two runs in the top of the seventh.
However, the Black Sox earned a walk-off win with three runs in the bottom of the frame to salvage the split.
Schmit had three hits, and Ormond had two more hits and drove in two for Stratford.
Stratford will play its home opener Thursday against Amherst at 6 p.m. at the Tiger Stadium Baseball Field.
