The Iola-Scandinavia boys track team has been voted the Zaleski Sports & MarshfieldAreaSports.com High School Athletes of the Month for June.
MarshfieldAreaSports.com & Zaleski Sports co-sponsor the award, which is in its 11th year.
Varsity athletes from the following high schools are eligible to be nominated for the award: Abbotsford, Amherst, Athens, Assumption, Auburndale, Colby, Columbus Catholic, D.C. Everest, Edgar, Granton, Greenwood, Iola-Scandinavia, Loyal, Marathon, Marshfield, Mosinee, Neillsville, Pacelli, Pittsville, Port Edwards, Rosholt, Spencer, Stratford, Stevens Point, Waupaca, Newman Catholic, Wild Rose, Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln and Wittenberg-Birnamwood.
The Iola-Scandinavia boys track team received 1,305 of the 2,028 votes cast during voting from June 17-24 at MarshfieldAreaSports.com.
Other nominees for the June award, which highlighted the top finishing teams from recently completed WIAA springs sports state tournaments were: the Auburndale softball team, the Mosinee baseball team, the Stevens Point Pacelli softball team, the Stratford boys track team and the Wisconsin Rapids Assumption softball team.
The Thunderbirds won the Division 3 state team title at the 2024 WIAA State Track & Field Championships in La Crosse, which was held May 31-June 1. Iola-Scandinavia finished with 45 points as sophomore Jensen Rice won the 100 meters and 110-meter hurdles, and senior Charlie Vater finished first in the 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters.
Other winners of the award during the 2023-24 school sports year include: Marshfield volleyball player Abby Ongna (August), Stevens Point football player Jackson Spees (September), Edgar football player Karter Butt (October), Amherst girls basketball player Scout Spadoni (November), Stevens Point Pacelli boys basketball player Camden Schurk (December), Wild Rose girls basketball player Cali Havlovitz (January), Marshfield wrestler Ava Gardner (February), Stratford track athlete Payton Glenn (March), Marshfield track athlete Ethan Knecht (April) and Iola-Scandinavia boys track athlete Jensen Rice (May).
This ends our monthly awards for the 2023-24 school year. Male and Female Athletes of the Year will be announced July 3.
