STRATFORD – Jack Tubbs went 4-for-4, which included a solo home run, as Stratford ripped Crandon 11-6 in a winners’ bracket game at the Class A American Legion Baseball Regional on Saturday afternoon at the Tiger Stadium Baseball Field.
Stratford (11-7) moves on to a winners’ bracket showdown with Clintonville at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. The winner advances to the championship round on Monday, while the loser will play the winner of the first game of the day between Marathon and Crandon, at 4 p.m.
Tubbs hit a solo homer in the first inning to put Stratford on the board.
After Crandon pulled ahead 2-1, Stratford erupted for six runs in the third inning to take the lead for good.
Alec Chapel singled and scored on an error, Brady Berg delivered an RBI double, Vance Kielman hit a sacrifice fly, and Landon Zawislan connected on a double to plate two more, putting Stratford up 6-2. Another Crandon error led to the sixth-run of the inning and a five-run lead for Stratford.
Berg smacked an RBI single and Tubbs scored on a double steal to up the lead to 9-2.
After Crandon scored twice in the fifth, Stratford retaliated with two runs of its own. Brady Schmidt scored on a wild pitch and Tubbs had a run-scoring single as Stratford led 11-4.
Berg finished with three hits and two RBI, and Zawislan had two hits and drove in two as well for Stratford.
Kielman picked up the pitching win, giving up two runs in 1 2/3 innings of relief. Berg and Riley Kroening finished off the final two innings to keep Stratford unbeaten in the four-day regional tournament. The regional champion qualifies for the Wisconsin Class A American Legion Baseball State Tournament in Osseo on Aug. 2-6.
