MENOMONIE – The Marshfield football team did not have an answer for the Menomonie passing game and dropped a weather-shortened 35-10 decision in a nonconference matchup Thursday at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.
The game was delayed due to a thunderstorm with 5:16 left in the third quarter and did not resume.
Menomonie quarterback Brady Johnson threw five touchdown passes, four for 30 yards or more, as the Mustangs took control from the start.
Johnson hit Isaac Ellison for touchdowns of 30 and 9 yards on the Mustangs’ first two drives of the game, handing them a 14-0 lead.
Keegan Fredrick booted a 24-yard field goal late in the first quarter to put Marshfield on the board, but Menomonie came back with three more TDs in the second quarter.
Johnson hit Ellison for an 80-yard strike on the first play of the second quarter. After Marshfield struck back with a 59-yard touchdown pass from Chase Robinson to Josh Peters, but Johnson came back with touchdown passes of 59 and 48 yards to Charlie Mikesell to put Menomonie on top 35-10 at halftime.
Marshfield drove deep into Menomonie territory in the third quarter before the storm hit and the game was ended.
Marshfield will open its Wisconsin Valley Conference schedule with a home game against Rice Lake in a crossover contest with the Big Rivers school on Friday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m.
