PITTSVILLE – Sophomore running back Jack Hoeper scored his third touchdown of the game with less than one minute to go to give the Spencer/Columbus Catholic football team a 28-22 win over Pittsville on Friday at Pittsville High School.

The Rockets led 20-6 after three quarters as Mac Konieczny hauled in a 34-yard touchdown pass from Devlin Timmler in the first quarter, and Hoeper had TD runs of 3 yards in the second quarter and 1 yard in the third.

Pittsville stormed back as Logan Zickert threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Jameson Krueger, and running back Dawson Luther tossed a 10-yard score to Dalton Darr. The Panthers converted two-point conversions on both touchdowns and led 22-20 with 1:44 left following Darr’s score.

Spencer/Columbus quickly went to work and drove down the field before Hoeper scored from 7 and added a two-point run to give the Rockets (1-1) their first win of the season.

“Pittsville is a good football team,” Spencer/Columbus coach Jason Gorst said. “They fought back to put us down late. hey are a well-coached very classy program. Luther (133 yards rushing) is one of the best football players in the area, without a doubt.

“We had to come up with plays in all three aspects of the game to pull out the win. I am very proud of our resiliency and fight throughout the game. Teddy Meyer had a couple of huge picks. Our defensive line of Sam Helgestad, Ryan Bernick and Davis Vinnedge had a stand-out game. Jack Hoeper ran the ball well behind a good performance by the offensive line, and Devlin made some clutch throws and Drew Lang and Austyn Widmann made some clutch catches on the last drive.”

Hoeper finished with 130 yards rushing and the three touchdowns, and Timmler ended up 12-for-17 for 139 yards passing for the Rockets.

Spencer/Columbus will host Stratford for its Central Wisconsin Conference Large Division opener on Friday, Sept. 6, at Spencer High Schoo.
