Columbus’ Scheer, Marshfield’s Hoerneman, Scharenbroch earn top-5 finishes at Columbus Catholic Cross Country Invite

MARSHFIELD – Columbus Catholic senior Isaac Scheer placed second and Marshfield’s Owen Hoerneman was fifth in the boys race at the annual Marshfield Columbus Catholic Cross Country Invitational on Saturday at Wildwood Park.

Dylan Riniker of Stillwater (Minn.) won the boys race in 16:09.3 in a mad dash for the finish line as Scheer came across just 2/10th of a second behind. Hoerneman ran the 5-kilometer race in 17:18.3.

Stillwater had five of the top eight finishers and won the Large School team title with 18 points. Marshfield was third with 71.

Chippewa Falls McDonell took first in the Small Schools division with 38 points, with Columbus Catholic a distant second with 65.

Nathan Scheer added a 15th-place finish for the Dons in 17:59.4.

Marshfield’s Lincoln Berger was 17th in 18:28.4, and Roman Ostermann, Alex Parker, Roman Drach and Marshall Neve grouped together to place 27th through 30th.

Natalie Scharenbroch led the Marshfield girls, taking fourth in 21:18.5, 54 seconds off the winning pace set by Ella Kukuk of Whitefish Bay, the Large School division team champ. Marshfield was second as Natalie Schmitt added a seventh-place finish (21:51.4), Kassidy Christopher was 14th (23:12.5), Taiya Lang took 15th (23:12.7) and Miriam McKee was 16th (23:19.7).

Columbus Catholic did not figure in the team standings with only three runners, but had a top-10 finsih as Abby Wojcik placed sixth in 21:35.7.

Marshfield will compete at the Marathon Invitational at Nine Mile Park in Rib Mountain on Thursday, while Columbus Catholic will be back in action next Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Loyal Invitational.
