Columbus Catholic soccer earns runner-up finish at Central Wisconsin Christian Tournament

WAUPUN – The Columbus Catholic soccer team finished second at the two-day Central Wisconsin Christian Tournament as it split a pair of games Saturday.

The Dons defeated River Valley 2-1 before losing to Sheboygan Christian/Lutheran 3-2 in the championship game.

After trailing 1-0 at halftime against River Valley, Jaylee Garneau and David Thill scored in a four-minute span midway through the second half as the Dons squeaked out the victory.

Xan Rodriguez scored early for the Dons in the championship match before Sheboygan Christian/Lutheran surged to a 2-1 lead at halftime.

After Cade Jansen tied it for Columbus 4:56 into the second half, the Eagles nailed home the game winner in the 57th minute.

Columbus goalkeeper Carter Sommer had four saves in the first game and nine against Sheboygan Christian/Lutheran.

The Dons will host Stevens Point Pacelli at Griese Park in Marshfield at 5 p.m. Tuesday in their Central Wisconsin Conference opener.
