SPENCER – The Stratford football team ran its record to a perfect 3-0 with a dominating 54-7 win over Spencer/Columbus Catholic in the Central Wisconsin Conference Large Division opener for both teams on Friday night at Spencer High School.
The Tigers were off and running from the start, scoring three times in the opening quarter and they tacked on two more touchdowns in the first 1½ minutes of the second to roll to the victory.
Spencer/Columbus (1-2, 0-1 CWC Large) started the game with a promising possession but it ended in a fumble that was scooped up by Stratford defensive back Jack Tubbs, who raced 68 yards down the right sideline for a touchdown to put the Tigers up 7-0.
Reid Miller scored on a 10-yard run and Tubbs, who is also Stratford’s starting quarterback, threw a 53-yard touchdown strike to Coltan Breit, upping the Tigers’ lead to 20-0.
The second quarter started like the first ended as Breit hauled in a 35-yard touchdown pass from Tubbs, and Tubbs threw his third TD pass of the game on a swing pass to Jett Schoenherr for 25 yards to make it 35-0.
After Tubbs and Schoenherr hooked up again for a 30-yard pass to get the ball down to the 1, Schoenherr pushed it in the end zone on a jet sweep and the Tigers led 41-0 at halftime.
Stratford (3-0, 1-0 CWC Large) tacked on two more scores in the third quarter as Brooks Vanderhoof ran in from the 14 and Reid Miller scored again for 36 yards away.
Spencer/Columbus got its only score with 1:37 to go on a 5-yard touchdown run by Mason Wolf.
Both teams are back in action with conference games on Friday, Sept. 13, as Stratford hosts Wittenberg-Birnamwood (2-1, 1-0 CWC Large) and Spencer/Columbus travels to Weyauwega-Fremont (1-2, 0-1 CWC Large).
