MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield volleyball team went a perfect 5-0 without losing a set as it won the title at its home Marshfield Invitational on Saturday at Marshfield High School.
The Tigers defeated Shawano 25-18, 25-10; Abbotsford 25-20, 25-7; Antigo 25-15, 25-19; Mondovi 25-9, 25-17; and Ladysmith 25-8, 25-20, to earn the tournament championship.
“I am very pleased that we came away from today’s tournament going undefeated and not dropping a single set,” Marshfield coach Josh Knecht said. “Our offense was very balanced with 5 different players having double digit kill totals.
“After our lunch break, we moved to a 6-2 offense to give Sydney Quarne, our back-up setter, some valuable game reps. I was very pleased with our hitting percentage for those two matches running the 6-2 with Kailyn Kurth and Sydney Quarne. I thought both setters did a great job of giving our hitters great chances to make good attacks and it showed with our match scores.”
Kurth finished with 66 assists and six service aces, Lauren Homolka had a team-high 24 kills and 10 blocks, and Zaida Kolbeck had 42 digs and nine aces for Marshfield, which improves to 17-1 this season.
Michelle Potts added 29 digs, Sophia Olson and Della Smith each had 20 kills, and Alyssa Foemmel had 15 kills as well for Marshfield.
“I also thought our servers did a great job all day keeping teams in out of system offense all day,” Knecht said. “We ended the tournament with 53 aces in 10 games, having 18 alone in the Ladysmith match. Defensively, I thought we read the other teams very well and gave up very few tips and deep corner shots.”
Shawano finished 4-1, Antigo 3-2, Abbotsford 2-3, Mondovi 1-4 and Ladysmith 0-5.
Marshfield will open its Wisconsin Valley Conference season at Wausau East on Thursday.
