MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield boys soccer team picked up its first win of the season, winning its long-awaited home opener 5-2 over Chippewa Falls in a nonconference match Tuesday at Heiting Community Stadium at Marshfield High School.
A wild first half saw the all of the game’s scoring as the Tigers scored three unanswered goals to forge ahead.
Keegan Fredrick scored just 4:35 in off an assist from Eli Bremer to put Marshfield (1-1-3) on top, before Chippewa Falls countered four minutes later.
A minute later Mason Horn scored for the Tigers on an assist from Matthew Uphoff, before the Cardinals tied it again at the 12:26 mark.
Bremer netted what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 15th minute, with an assist from Cash Frey, and the Tigers were up for good.
Fredrick added two more goals before halftime, with Dillon McHugh and Dirk Vanderwyst assisting, and Marshfield survived the rest of the way.
Kai Rens picked up the win in goal for the Tigers.
“The second half we pressed and created some really good opportunities we just couldn’t capitalize on,” Marshfield coach Jeff Molter said. “All in all, a good night to be a Tiger. It was great to see students in the stands cheering us on, something we’re no always accustomed to, at our home opener.”
Marshfield will host Merrill in a Wisconsin Valley Conference match Thursday at 7 p.m.
