WAUSAU – The Marshfield volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 sweep of Wausau East in its Wisconsin Valley Conference dual match opener on Thursday at East High School.

The Tigers rolled 25-15, 25-10, 25-13, improving to 18-1 overall this season.

Kailyn Kurth had 22 assists and three service aces, and Lauren Homolka had 11 kills and two blocks for the Tigers.

Alyssa Foemmel added eight kills, Devyn LeMoine and Della Smith each had five kills, Sydney Quarne had a team-high four aces and Zaida Kolbeck led the defense with 11 digs for Marshfield.

“We came out tonight a little flat, but once we got our rhythm, we were able to make some nice runs,” Marshfield coach Josh Knecht said. “Wausau East, I thought, did a nice job of blocking and playing scrappy defense, forcing us to make multiple attacks in the same possession. Alyssa Foemmel and Lauren Homolka each had very efficient nights terminating the ball for us.

“We were without Michelle Potts tonight, so it gave us a chance to play Hope Kelnhofer and Foemmel in the back row, giving them some valuable in-game reps. Having Zaida Kolbeck on defense is just a great advantage because she can cover so much ground and does a great job of communicating.”

Marshfield will have a week off before hosting Stevens Point for its first home WVC match on Thursday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m.
