Amherst tops Columbus Catholic soccer in weather-shortened CWC battle

AMHERST – A goal just in the nick of time gave Amherst a 1-0 win over Marshfield Columbus Catholic in a Central Wisconsin Conference boys soccer game Thursday at Amherst High School.

The goal came on a mistake by the Dons and went down as an own goal at the 54:30 mark of the game, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead.

Just one minute later, the game was stopped due to a lightning and not resumed, and Amherst takes over first place in the CWC as a result.

Amherst is now 9-1 overall and 5-0 in the Central Wisconsin Conference, while Columbus Catholic drops to 8-2-1 and 4-1 in conference play.

Carter Sommer had five saves in goal for the Dons.

Columbus Catholic will host a pair of games next week at Griese Park, playing Gresham/Bowler on Monday and McDonell/Regis on Tuesday. Both games start at 5 p.m.
