MARSHFIELD – Friday’s Wisconsin Valley Conference football game between D.C. Everest and Marshfield was an unusual one.

Both offenses seemed unstoppable at times, there were big plays and big penalties, and some bizarre conferences among the officials that lasted seemingly forever, but in the end it all came down to a dominate second quarter from the Evergreens.

D.C. Everest scored three touchdowns in the second quarter, including a long 65-yard touchdown pass on a screen in the final minute of the half, and used that big lead it built up to pull out a 36-25 win over the Tigers on Friday night at Heiting Community Stadium at Marshfield High School.

D.C. Everest running back Blake Bangtson accounted for 257 offensive yards and scored three touchdowns, including that 65-yard TD reception right before halftime, as the Evergreens improve to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference.

Marshfield marched right down the first on its opening possession. Grayden Rode had runs of 35 and 20 yards, and quarterback Chase Robinson finished it off with an 8-yard touchdown run to put the Tigers up 6-0 after a missed two-point attempt.

D.C. Everest responded with a 78-yard drive on 12 plays. Bangtson carried the ball seven times for 30 yards and quarterback Logan George snuck in from the 1 for a touchdown. The Evergreens made the extra point and led 7-6, a lead they would never relinquish.

Everest scored on its next drive as well, with Bangtson scoring from 1 yard out on the fourth play of the second quarter, going up 14-6.

The Evergreens then put together two quick scoring drives at the end of the half. After blocking a punt and taking over at the Marshfield 12, George hit Cohen Priebe for a 9-yard touchdown with 3:20 left.

After Marshfield was forced to punt, D.C. Everest took over at its own 11, but needed just three plays to do the length of the field. A 15-yard pass from George to Cole O’Brien was followed by a middle screen to Bangtson, who caught the ball near the line of scrimmage and ran 65 yards for another score with just 58 seconds to go before halftime. D.C. Everest took a 29-6 lead into halftime.

Marshfield’s defense held D.C. Everest on a fourth-down play after its drive reached the Tigers’ 35. On Marshfield’s first offensive play, Robinson threw a quick hitch to Brooks Hinson, who turned and pitched to a streaking Haiden Carlson and he carried it the remaining 55 yards for a touchdown, cutting the Tigers’ deficit to 29-13.

After a Marshfield interception on the final play of the third quarter, and a nearly 15-minute conversation among the officials and both coaching staffs, and then the officials again, the turnover was disallowed due to off-setting penalties.

The Tigers took advantage of the situation by scoring in five plays into the fourth quarter on a 9-yard pass from Robinson to Jakob Sadowska. A failed two-point try allowed D.C. Everest to keep a 29-19 lead and the Evergreens immediately put the game away.

Everest drove 80 yards in eight plays. A 51-yard pass from George to Bangtson to set up the Evergreens at 6, where Bangston finished off the drive with a touchdown, upping their lead to 36-19. Bangtson ended up with 141 yards rushing on 30 carries and had 116 yards receiving on just two catches.

Marshfield went down and scored on its next drive as Robinson scored from the 8 with 4:31 left, but after a failed onside kick attempt, D.C. Everest was able to run out the clock.

Robinson finished with 171 yards passing and two touchdowns, while running for two more. Hinson ended up with eight catches for 72 yards, and Rode had 70 of the Tigers’ 149 rushing yards.

Marshfield (1-4, 1-2 Wisconsin Valley Conference) will host Wisconsin Rapids next Friday, Sept. 27, for its Homecoming Game. The Tigers need to win three of their final four games in order to automatically qualify for the WIAA postseason. Click here to view the Wisconsin Valley Conference football standings
