Stratford football wins high-scoring affair over Weyauwaga-Fremont

STRATFORD – Stratford’s offense proved unstoppable as it scored on eight-straight possessions and the Tigers defeated Weyauwega-Fremont 53-33 in a Central Wisconsin Conference Large Division football game Friday night at Tiger Stadium.

The two teams exchanged touchdowns over the first 1½ quarters as Caleb Wrensch pounded it in from the 7 on the Tigers’ opening drive, and Weyauwega-Fremont quarterback Kameron Zielke scored from the 4 as Stratford took a 7-6 lead into the second period.

Jack Tubbs plowed in from the 3 on Stratford’s next possession, scoring early in the second quarter, only to see the Warhawks respond again on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Zielke to Carter Birdyshaw. Both extra points were missed the Stratford led 13-12.

Wrensch came back with a huge play, returning the ensuing kickoff 88 yards down to the W-F 4. After a penalty set the Tigers back, Brooks Vanderhoof scampered in from the 13 and added a two-point run to up Stratford’s lead to 21-12.

Tubbs added a 20-yard scoring run later in the quarter in what was the first of three touchdowns in the final 3:32 of the half.

After seemingly stopped the Warhawks, Stratford was caught off guard as Weyauwega-Fremont punter Charles Mueller threw a pass downfield on a fake punt that was caught by Broc Billington, who finished off a 64-yard touchdown with 2:51 to go.

Stratford, however, retaliated before halftime as Reid Miller capped a long drive with a 14-yard TD run with 21 seconds to go before halftime and the Tigers led 33-19 at the break.

The teams exchanged touchdowns the rest of the way as Miller had a 40-yard scoring run, Jett Schoenherr plowed in from the 3 and Vanderhoof tacked on a 7-yard score, with the Warhawks scoring twice in between on a another TD pass from Zielke to Birdyshaw and a 90-yard kick return by Zielke.

Stratford (5-0, 3-0 CWC Large) will take its 17-game winning streak into another conference matchup at Colby (2-3, 2-1 CWC Large) next Friday, Sept. 27. Weyauwega-Fremont (2-3, 1-2 CWC Large) will play host to Marathon.
