Columbus Catholic volleyball goes 2-3 at loaded Diocesan Tournament

CHIPPEWA FALLS – The Columbus Catholic volleyball team finished 2-3 at a spirited Diocesan Tournament on Saturday at McDonell High School.

All six teams at the tournament were ranked in the top 10 of last week’s Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association state poll in either Division 4 or Division 5.

Columbus Catholic defeated Wausau Newman Catholic 25-19, 25-22, and Stevens Point Pacelli 25-22, 25-17, while losing to McDonell 21-25, 25-23, 15-13, Eau Claire Regis 20-25, 27-25, 15-10, and Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran 25-20, 25-10.

“It was a great day of volleyball with fierce competition,” Columbus Catholic coach Kat Egle said. “The girls grew so much as a team playing at this high level. All the teams there are ranked in the state. We are playing so well together.”

Shelby Spata led the Dons with 46 kills and nine blocks, while adding 40 digs and six service aces. Aubrey Waldhauser added 23 kills and eight blocks, Gracie Wilczek had 16 kills, 32 digs and eight aces, and Alayna Egle had 44 assists for Columbus.

Sophie Wilczek added 43 assists and nine aces, and Delia Trader had a team-best 61 digs for the Dons.

Columbus Catholic will play its home opener Tuesday against Neillsville.
