SPENCER – The Spencer/Columbus Catholic football team gave undefeated Amherst all it could handle, playing to a scoreless first half.
However, two big plays early in the third quarter changed the game for Amherst, which was able to put up four touchdowns in the second half to pull away for a 28-13 win in a Central Wisconsin Conference Large Division game Friday night at Spencer High School.
Tyler Loken returned the opening kickoff of the second half 94 yards for a score and Sully Perkins raced 69 yards for another score to give the Falcons (6-0, 4-0 CWC Large) a quick 14-0 lead after the break and propel them to victory.
Spencer/Columbus got back to within one score on a 39-yard touchdown pass from Devlin Timmler to Mac Konieczny, but Amherst came back with two more TDs in the fourth quarter to make the deficit too big for the Rockets.
Timmler hooked up with Konieczny often in the loss as the junior receiver finished with eight catches for 167 yards and hauled in another score late, this time for 4 yards. Timmler finished 13-for-27 for 181 yards.
Spencer/Columbus (1-5, 0-4 CWC Large) will host Loyal/Greenwood next Friday, Oct. 4.
