COLBY – What appeared to be a competitive high school football game on paper soon became a nightmare for the hometown Colby Hornets as undefeated Stratford turned to an unlikely source and rolled to a 49-0 drubbing in the Central Wisconsin Conference Large Division matchup Friday night at Colby High School.

That unlikely source?

A devastating passing game against a stacked Colby defensive line that produced 433 passing yards for the Tigers.

If you were present in Colby on a perfect night for football, you would have seen something seldom seen in Central Wisconsin football and that was a 400- yard passing night, and from a Stratford quarterback none-the-less.

Tigers senior Jack Tubbs was 14-for-17 for 407 yards with five touchdown passes and one on the ground. Backup QB Brady Berg kicked in another scoring pass for Stratford (6-0, 4-0 CWC Large).

After receiving a punt on their own 35, Tubbs shuffled a pass to Jett Schoenherr, who caught the left corner and headed south tight-roping the sideline at the 50 before ending up in the end zone. Mason Miller drilled the first of seven extra points and the Tigers were up by seven early.

It was hard to fault Colby’s strategy of stacking the line against the run, but in the end the Tigers had their number.

Stratford wouldn’t score again until the 8:59 mark of the second quarter.

Then Tubbs showed off his arm, throwing a bomb to Caleb Wrensch, who lugged it about 30 yards after a 75- yard pitch and catch to make it 14-0.

Tubbs ran it in from the 6 shortly after and it quickly a 21-0 lead for the Tigers.

A 76-yard long square-out and scamper to Alec Chapel and another Tubbs-to-Chapel dart with just 11 seconds in the half made it 35-0.

“Colby did a good job of stopping our run, which hasn’t happened a lot,” said Stratford coach Jason Tubbs. “That’s the nice thing about our team is the balance and Jack (Tubbs) did a great job passing. The receivers made some great catches. Coltan (Breit) picked one off his shoelaces. Great job to see we can do anything we want. We can pass, we can run.”

Tubbs finished off his historic night with another under-duress dart to Breit for 21 yards and a TD.

Berg used a shuffle pass of his own for 26 yards to Cayden Leonhardt to end the scoring with 2:21 left in the game.

“I think he (Jack Tubbs) had over 300 yards (actually over 400) passing. Not sure anyone has ever done that here. We’ve had some great individual rushing games for sure. Good to see we can mx it up. And it was a pretty clean game. That’s a playoff team in my opinion and we might have to play them again. You never know now in D-5.”

Stratford will head to Marathon next Friday, Oct. 4, before a big showdown at Tiger Stadium against Amherst on Oct. 11. The Falcons are also unbeaten and tied for first in the CWC Large with the Tigers after beating Spencer/Columbus on Friday.
