APPLETON – The Marshfield girls volleyball team finished second, going 3-1 at the 12-team Appleton East Tournament on Saturday.

The Tigers defeated Ashwaubenon 25-9, 25-18; Appleton East 25-22, 25-18; and Kewaskum 25-21, 22-25, 15-12; before losing to fifth-ranked Bay Port 25-22, 25-22, in the championship match.

Lauren Homolka had 31 kills, including eight block kills, Della Smith added 26 kills and 17 digs, and Sophia Olson had 14 kills to lead the Marshfield offense.

Kailyn Kurth finished with 68 assists, 17 digs and six service aces, and Zaida Kolbeck had 42 digs and six aces as well for the Tigers.

“There are not many teams we have played this year that are taller than us and they (Bay Port) could hit from all three positions effectively,” Marshfield coach Josh Knecht said. “There block was also very big and something we haven’t seen yet this season. We played hard and made some nice runs to keep it close, but to Bay Port’s credit, they were able to close each game on us.

“I was overall happy with our performance, but there are some things we definitely can watch on film and hopefully get better at before the end of the season.”

Marshfield will be back in action Thursday at home against D.C. Everest in a battle of the top-two teams in the Wisconsin Valley Conference.
