STEVENS POINT – The Marshfield boys soccer team kept its Wisconsin Valley Conference title hopes alive with an impressive 3-1 win over Stevens Point on Tuesday night at the Portage County Youth Soccer Complex.

After an early score for Stevens Point, Matthew Uphoff scored off an assist from Keegan Fredrick to tie the game up.

Fredrick scored 15 minutes later to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead at halftime, and 5:36 into the second half, Fredrick nailed home another goal. Marshfield was able to buckle down defensively and hold on from there to finish off the victory.

Marshfield is now 6-3-3 overall and 3-1-1 in the conference, tied for second place with Wisconsin Rapids behind D.C. Everest (4-1 WVC). The Tigers will head to D.C. Everest on Thursday night.

“Once again, my hat’s off to our defense,” Marshfield coach Jeff Molter said. “Dirk Vaderwyst, Joey Ketterer, JJ Steinbach, and Afton Hamil have really stepped up and embraced our new formation and played it well. Credit also to our keeper Kai Rens, who made a couple of spectacular saves and is an excellent resource for us to play a drop too to change our point of attack.”

Rens finished with 15 saves as each team had 18 shots in the contest.
