MARSHFIELD – The Marshfield volleyball team took a big step toward another Wisconsin Valley Conference championship with a 3-1 win over D.C. Everest on Thursday night at Marshfield High School.

The Tigers won 25-18, 25-20, 20-25, 25-21, to remain undefeated in the WVC at 7-0 and pull a full two wins ahead of D.C. Everest (5-2) with five matches remaining.

Sophia Olson led the Tigers’ offense with 11 kills and added four blocks. Della Smith added 10 kills, 12 digs, and three service aces, Lauren Homolka chipped in eight kills and six blocks, and Kaily Kurth tallied 39 assists for Marshfield.

Zaida Kolbeck finished with 13 digs and Alyssa Foemmel had seven kills as well for Marshfield.

“This entire week we talked about the importance of this match,” Marshfield coach Josh Knecht said. “Winning tonight puts us up two games on the conference lead from everyone else. D.C. Everest really played their hearts out tonight and made some unbelievable digs against us. The spectators tonight really had a show put on for them with the quality of play, especially in Game 4, with some great defensive plays to keep the ball alive.

“Offensively we were really sporadic tonight. We were not as effective at terminating the ball. Give a bunch of the credit to the Everest players for that, but in Game 4 we really turned it on and had some big time kills to put it away. It was a thrilling match and I was happy to see the size of the crowd in filling up the Fieldhouse in support of Lung Cancer Awareness and supporting the Kelnhofer family.”

Marshfield will compete at the Eau Claire Memorial Invitational on Saturday.
