WAUSAU – The Marshfield football team inched closer to a playoff berth as it pulled out a 14-8 win over Wausau West on Friday night at Thom Field.
The Tigers’ defense forced a pair of turnovers and held Wausau West scoreless until four minutes into the fourth quarter.
Marshfield took a 7-0 lead on a 1-yard rushing touchdown by quarterback Chase Robinson and that lead held until halftime.
An interception from linebacker Dawson Meissner seven minutes into the third quarter gave Marshfield the ball at West 30. A 14-yard run by Haiden Carlson was followed by a spinning 16-yard touchdown run for Grayden Rode, upping the Tigers’ lead to 14-0.
West scored its only touchdown at the 8:02 mark of the fourth quarter when Jack Kostroski hit Shea Jones for a 16-yard score. Kostroski added a two-point conversion run, making it 14-8.
Marshfield was able to run out the clock late in the quarter and preserve the win, improving to 3-4 overall and 3-2 in the WVC with its second road win of the year.
Marshfield will host Eau Claire North (2-5, 2-3 WVC) next Friday, Oct. 11, for its final home game of the regular season and with a win, would clinch a WIAA postseason berth.
