EAGLE RIVER – The Marshfield girls hockey team dominated two-thirds of the game against Northland Pines on Monday night, but it was the first period that sunk the Tigers.
Northland Pines scored three first period goals and Marshfield never recovered, losing 3-0 in a Great Northern Conference game at the Eagle River Recreation Arena.
Paige Healy, Kelly McGinnis and Ali Plese scored for the Eagles in the first period.
After that, the Tigers (11-3, 6-2 GNC) dominated, but couldn’t get a shot past Kim VanBrunt, who had 30 saves.
Marshfield held the Eagles (10-6-1, 7-2 GNC) to just three shots on goal over the final two periods.
“We didn’t play a solid first period tonight as a team and let the game get
away from us, we beat ourselves,” Marshfield coach Nate Sparbel said. “The girls absolutely dominated the second and third periods, but just couldn’t find the back of the net.
“The girls are walking away from this one with their chins up. Overall, we played a great team game. Sometimes the puck just doesn’t bounce your way.”
