EAU CLAIRE – An up-and-down day for the Marshfield volleyball team ended with a fourth-place finish at the Eau Claire Memorial Invitational on Saturday.

Marshfield defeated Baraboo 25-19, 25-9, before suffering a 25-23, 25-19, loss to host Eau Claire Memorial. The Tigers responded with wins of 25-13, 25-14, over Nekoosa and 25-22, 25-17, over Holmen to reach the third-place match, where they were upset by Altoona 25-22, 18-25, 15-12.

Marshfield is now 31-4 this season heading into a Wisconsin Valley Conference match at Wausau West Thursday and the second WVC Meet next Saturday, Oct., 12 at Wausau East.

“We were up by five points late in Game 1 versus Memorial and then let that one slip away,” Marshfield coach Josh Knecht said. “We lost the momentum and throughout that match we really struggled to get into in-system offense. We bounced back versus Nekoosa and then played our best match of the day versus a really good Holmen team. We had a long break and waited to play Altoona and came out flat. We battled hard, but in the end just didn’t make enough plays.”

Della Smith had 31 kills, Kailyn Kurth had 92 assists, and Lauren Homolka had 29 kills, 11 block kills and 12 service aces for Marshfield.

Zaida Kolbeck had a team-high 58 digs, and Sophia Olson added 21 kills in the five matches for the Tigers.
