Marshfield’s Holm, Oertel fall short at WIAA Division 1 Tomah girls golf sectional

TOMAH – Marshfield senior McKenzie Holm and sophomore Lexxi Oertel were eliminated from postseason competition at a WIAA Division 1 girls golf sectional on Monday at Hiawatha Golf Course.

Holm shot a 90 and Oertel had a 94 as individual sectional qualifiers for the Tigers.

The top two teams and top three individuals not on those teams qualify for the 2024 WIAA State Girls Golf Tournament, which will be held Oct. 14-15 at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison.

Prescott, which was moved up to Division 1 after winning the past four WIAA Division 2 state titles, won the sectional team championship with a score of 323. Hudson finished with a score of 339 to finish second and qualify for state for the second year in a row. Tomah was a close third with a 341.

Chippewa Falls/McDonell senior Sarah Chaffee was the individual sectional champion as she finished with a 5-over par 77, two shots in front of Ava Swavely of Hudson and Gabbi Matzek of Prescott. Holmen senior Jayeanna Palm (81) and Altoona/Eau Claire Regis senior Karalyn Skinner (82 ) will join Chaffee at state as individual qualifiers from the Tomah Sectional.

Holm shot a 42 on the front nine, and had pars on the par-3 10th hole and the par-4 11th before finding trouble late and settling for a 48 on the back nine and a final score of 90. Oertel shot a 94 (46-48).
