RHINELANDER – Marshfield will be sending two singles players and two doubles teams to sectionals after competition at a WIAA Division 1 girls tennis subsectional on Monday at Rhinelander High School.
Those reaching the semifinals in No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, and players reaching the finals in all other flights, qualify for the Division 1 sectional at the Menard Tennis Center in Eau Claire on Wednesday.
Lillian Griesbach at No. 1 singles, Talia Soskos at No. 3 singles, the No. 1 doubles team of Lucy Luedtke and Isabel Krueger, and the No. 2 doubles team of Aubrey Layton and Audrey Luedtke are all moving on for Marshfield.
Griesbach reached the No. 1 singles semifinals with a 6-4, 6-3, win over Abbey Olson of Wausau East, while Soskos won two matches, including a 6-2, 6-2, sweep of Emily Lucht of Wausau West in the semifinals.
In doubles competition, Lucy Luedtke and Krueger won their No. 1 doubles quarterfinal match over Grace Holmes and Indya Mann of Medford, 6-2, 6-4, and Layton and Audrey Luedtke earned two victories to reach the No. 2 finals, including a 7-5, 7-6 (3) thriller over Kali Rutta and Izabel Lezcano of D.C. Everest.
The top four finishers at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, and the top finisher at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles will automatically qualify for the 2024 WIAA State Individual Girls Tennis Tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, which will be held Oct. 17-19. The top team in the sectional moves on to the 2024 WIAA State Team Girls Tennis Tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison on Oct. 25-26.
Maddie Kundinger at No. 2 singles, and the No. 3 doubles team of Sophia Rosandich and Madeline Kloos were eliminated for the Tigers.
