WAUSAU – The Marshfield volleyball team clinched no worse than a share of its fifth-straight Wisconsin Valley Conference championship with a pair of wins at the second WVC meet of the season Saturday at Wausau East High School.

Marshfield defeated Merrill 25-16, 31-29, 25-23, and Stevens Point 25-23, 25-23, 25-19, to improve to 10-0 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference.

Lauren Homolka had 26 kills, nine blocks and five service aces, Della Smith added 12 kills and 18 digs, Kailyn Kurth had 57 assists and 17 digs, and Zaida Kolbeck led the defense with 24 digs for Marshfield.

Alyssa Foemmel chipped in nine kills, Sophia Olson added seven kills and six blocks, and Michelle Potts had 20 digs for the Tigers.

“Our first goal this season was to continue the run and to win a fifth conference championship in a row and we ensured that today,” Marshfield coach Josh Knecht said. “I thought our energy was really good throughout the morning and I was happy with how hard we fought. Merrill and SPASH had leads on us for multiple games each, but we found some way to pull out a win. Merrill had game point on us at 29-28, but we made a couple of great plays to win that second game 31-29.”

Marshfield will look to finish off an outright and potential undefeated conference title with home matches against Wausau East on Tuesday and Wisconsin Rapids on Thursday.
