MARSHFIELD – Keegan Fredrick headed in a corner kick from Eli Bremer with 28 seconds to go in overtime, lifting the Marshfield boys soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Onalaska in a WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal Tuesday night at Heiting Community Stadium at Marshfield High School.
The No. 3 seed Tigers (7-7-4) will travel to No. 2 seed Holmen (14-3-2) for a D-2 regional final Saturday at 1 p.m. Onalaska finishes its season with a 4-10-4 mark.
Following a scoreless first half, Marshfield finally broke through as Fredrick drilled home a shot from 25 yards out in the 55th minute to put the Tigers up 1-0.
Onalaska managed to take advantage of a loose ball in front of the net as Alex Hauser smacked it in the 72nd minute to knot the score at 1-1.
Both teams had opportunities to push in a potential game-winner, but both goalkeepers were on their games as Onalaska’s Elijah Fernandez finished with 16 saves and Marshfield’s Kai Rens had seven.
The teams played even through the first overtime and the opening nine minutes of the second extra period before Bremer placed a perfect corner kick in front of the net and Fredrick flew in from the top of the goalie box and headed in the winner with 28 seconds to go.
“What a great way to cap off your last showing on your home pitch for our seniors,” Marshfield coach Jeff Molter said. “It really shows how deep the will and fight is in this bunch of guys we have.”
Marshfield finished with a 29-10 shot advantage.
