Marshfield cross country fails to earn state berths at WIAA Division 1 Menomonie sectional

MENOMONIE – Marshfield was shut out of state meet qualifiers at a WIAA Division 1 cross country sectional on Saturday at Menomonie High School.

The top two teams and top five individuals not on those teams for both the boys and girls at the sectional qualified for the 2024 WIAA State Cross Country Championships at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids on Saturday, Nov. 2.

The Marshfield girls placed fifth and the boys took eighth among the 12 teams at the sectional, and did not have any individual qualifiers.

Hudson won the boys team title, with Menomonie taking second. Eau Claire Memorial’s Will Pongonis won the boys race in 15:28.0 and earned one of the five individual state berths.

Also qualifying for state for the boys were Josh Neilitz of Wausau West, Quinlan Andrews and Jonah Majerus of River Falls, and Evan Fuchs of D.C. Everest.

Lincoln Berger placed 26th in 17:26.7 and Marshall Neve was 33rd in 17:37.4 for Marshfield.

Lauren McCalla won the girls race in 18:31.7 to lead Menomonie to the team title. Eau Claire Memorial was second.

New Richmond’s Marah Benedict and Bree Barfknecht, Hudson’s Lyla Vlcek, River Falls’ Olive Halvorsen and Superior’s Elena Almonte earned the five individual state qualifying spots.

Marshfield junior Natalie Scharenbroch fell short of a return trip to state, placing 13th in 19:39.9, 20 seconds in back of the last individual spot. Adeline Lonsdale ended up 18th for the Tigers in 20:05.1.
