WESTFIELD – Columbus Catholic brothers Isaac Scheer and Nathan Scheer are making a return trip to the state meet after finishing second and third at a WIAA Division 3 cross country sectional Saturday at Westfield High School.
The top two teams and top five individuals not on those teams for both the boys and girls at the sectional qualified for the 2024 WIAA State Cross Country Championships at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids on Saturday, Nov. 2.
Declan Gregg of team champion La Crosse Aquinas won the boys 5-kilometer race in 16:31.9, with senior Isaac Scheer taking second in 16:37.0 and sophomore Nathan Scheer finishing third in 17:46.1 to grab two of the five individual state meet berths.
Isaac Scheer placed sixth and Nathan Scheer 63rd in the Division 3 state meet last year.
Wisconsin Rapids Assumption’s Reed Hartjes, and Bangor’s Evan Buccholz and Grayson Truskowski earned the others.
Aquinas won the team title with 42 points, with Necedah second with 60. Columbus Catholic was fourth with 132 and Auburndale 11th with 271. Spencer had an incomplete squad.
Auburndale’s James Binder placed 33rd and Jaxon Grube was 41st.
Aquinas also won the girls team title, finishing with 59 points, with Assumption taking the other team spot at state with 60 points. Auburndale was sixth with 140 points. Columbus Catholic and Spencer had incomplete teams and did not earn any individual qualifying spots.
Abby Wojcik placed 19th in 21:41.9 for the Dons, while Luise Meyer led Auburndale, taking 21st in 21:59.3.
