Marshfield High School alumni Daulton Varsho of the Toronto Blue Jays was named the American League Gold Glove winner for center field as Major League Baseball announced the awards on Sunday.
Varsho, a Chili native who graduated from Marshfield High School in 2014, had the best defensive WAR of any player in Major League Baseball at 3.1 The WAR – Wins above replacement – means Varsho was worth 3.1 wins for his team compared to the average center fielder, just based on his defense.
Overall, it was measured that Varsho saved 28 runs for Toronto this season between his play in center field and left field, which was five more than any other outfielder.
Varsho completed his fifth MLB season last month and second in Toronto, hitting .214 with 18 home runs, 58 RBI, 73 runs scored and 10 stolen bases.
