Wisconsin Valley Union girls hockey loses to Central Wisconsin Storm

STEVENS POINT – The Central Wisconsin Storm opened up a commanding lead with a three-goal effort in the second period and went on to defeat the Wisconsin Valley Union 5-1 in girls hockey action Tuesday at Ice Hawks Arena.

Following a scoreless first period, Malia Beregi, Ava Whitmore and Jayden Yirkovsky scored in an eight-minute stretch to give the Storm, who was playing in their season-opener, a 3-0 lead.

Yirkovsky added another 4:38 into the second period before Wisconsin Valley got on the board on a goal from Campbell Spees.

Gabi Heuser finished the scoring for the Storm with a goal with 3:34 remaining.

Issie Wojcik made 27 saves for the Union (1-1), while Storm goalie Cami Flohr saved 17 shots.

Wisconsin Valley returns to action next Tuesday, Dec. 3, at Medford.

The Storm will host a tournament at the Mosinee Recreation Center this weekend. They will play the University School of Milwaukee on Friday at 7 p.m., and either the Eau Claire Stars or Hayward on Saturday.
