Stratford girls basketball uses free throw advantage to defeat Marathon

STRATFORD – The Stratford girls basketball team raced out to a 17-point halftime lead and was able to finish off a 60-50 win over Marathon in the Marawood Conference South Division opener for both teams on Tuesday night at Stratford High School.

The Tigers (2-0 overall) led 31-14 at halftime and were able to maintain their double-digit lead at the end.

Carly Pankratz made 10 of 12 free throws and scored 18 points, Kayla Casperson chipped in 15 points, and Tria Tubbs had 11 points and eight rebounds for Stratford.

The game was won at the free throw line for Stratford as it finished 29-for-41, while Marathon was only 13-for-30 as the teams combined for 53 fouls.

Stratford will host Wabeno/Laona for a nonconference game on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.
