Columbus Catholic girls basketball storms back to defeat Spencer in Cloverbelt East opener

SPENCER –Marshfield Columbus Catholic came back from a seven-point halftime deficit to defeat Spencer 37-35 in the Cloverbelt Conference East Division girls basketball opener for both teams on Tuesday night at Spencer High School.

The Rockets led 16-9 after a sluggish first half before Columbus Catholic (3-1, 1-0 Cloverbelt East) bounced back to open up a seven-point lead late after a 3-pointer by Sophie Wilczek with 1:41 remaining.

A three-point play by Autumn Davis, who had a team-high 14 points, brought Spencer to within 35-32 with 54 seconds left but the Rockets (3-1, 0-1 Cloverbelt East) could not get any closer.

Sophie Wilczek made two free throws with six seconds to go to ice the win for the Dons before a 3-pointer by Montanna Kohls just before the buzzer provided the final margin.

Gracie Wilczek had 10 points and Sophie Wilczek nine for Columbus Catholic.

Both teams will play conference games again on Friday. Columbus Catholic will host Neillsville and Spencer will travel to Loyal.
